Manner in Dative Alternation

چکیده

There are a number of well-known restrictions for the Dative Alternation (cf. Green (1974), Oehrle (1976), Gropen, Pinker, Hollander, & Goldberg (1989), Pinker (1989), Pesetsky (1992), Levin (1993). I will show that several of the low-level semantic restrictions are consequences of a more general one involving the incorporation of a manner component into the meaning of the verb. These restrictions can be explained by assuming two distinct representations of verbs participating in the Dative Alternation: The PO frame expresses movement of an object t o a g o a l , the DO frame implies a change of possession . I will argue that these restrictions cannot be expressed in a syntactic representation of lexical meaning as in Pinker (1989) and Hale & Keyser (1993).

Predicting is not explaining: targeted learning of the dative alternation

Corpus linguists dig into large-scale collections of texts to better understand the rules governing a given language. We advocate for ambitious corpus linguistics drawing inspiration from the latest developments of semiparametrics for a modern targeted learning. Transgressing discipline-specific borders, we adapt an approach that has proven successful in biostatistics and apply it to the well-t...

Dative Constructions in Chinese

There are three dative constructions in Chinese. A verb may be present in just one, in two, or in all three constructions. A pattern can be captured in the constructional approach. While the constructions all carry a sense of transfer, they differ in terms of range of transfer and argument role of the dative object or the gei object. The constructional view also provides an account of the patte...

Evaluating automatic annotation: automatically detecting and enriching instances of the dative alternation

In this article, we automatically create two large and richly annotated data sets for studying the English dative alternation. With an intrinsic and an extrinsic evaluation, we address the question of whether such data sets that are obtained and enriched automatically are suitable for linguistic research, even if they contain errors. The extrinsic evaluation consists of building logistic regres...

Early syntactic productivity : Evidence from dative shift q

The abstractness of children’s early syntactic representations has been questioned in the recent acquisition literature. While some research has suggested that children’s knowledge of basic constructions such as the transitive is robust and abstract at a very young age, other work has proposed that young children only have constructions that are specific to individual lexical items. The present...

Lexical Fillers Influence the Dative Alternation: Estimating Constructional Saliency Using Web Document Frequencies

We propose a new measure of constructional saliency for use with Web-data, which corrects for infrequent forms. The measure attempts to incorporate both collocational information as well as frequency of use for the whole construction. We report on results for a case study of the so-called dative alternation in English, and show that our measure of saliency indicates that not only do specific ve...
